Disc Golf History: How The Game Came To Be

Ben Mills

Disc golf is a sport in which players throw a flying disc at a target. The sport was invented in the early 1960s by Wham-O executive, “Steady” Ed Headrick. Headrick was inspired to create the sport after seeing people playing a game called “Frisbee golf” in which players threw Frisbees at a golf course.

Headrick modified the game by creating a special disc that was designed for flying long distances and accurately. He also developed a set of rules for the game, which included a par for each hole. The first disc golf course was installed in 1972 at Oak Grove Park in Pasadena, California.

The sport of disc golf quickly grew in popularity, and by the early 1980s there were disc golf courses all over the United States. In 1976, the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) was founded to promote the sport and to organize tournaments. The PDGA has since grown to over 40,000 members worldwide.
